College English Preparation for ESL Students
Duration: 4 weeks for each level
The following are introductory college-level writing and grammar classes for second
language students emphasizing parts of speech and simple and compound sentences. Writing of sentences and short paragraphs in standard
academic English will serve as the focus of written work. Reading, speaking and
listening skills are also practiced.
- ESL Beginners
A college-level writing and grammar course with further work on grammar,
usage, parts of speech and simple, compound and complex sentences. Also covered are organization of the single paragraph and short essays, selected
readings, summarizing, and idioms. Speaking and listening skills are expanded.
- ESL Intermediate
A college-level composition class for second language students
emphasizing advanced grammar structures, punctuation and idioms. The course introduces organization of longer essays, coherence and cohesion and rhetorical patterns. Students will be expected to write at least 6000 original words (approximately
30 pages) in this class.
- ESL Advanced
An advanced college-level composition course for second-language students
who must achieve a mastery of grammar, usage and punctuation. This course emphasizes editing skills and introduces the use of research materials and quoted sources. Students will be expected to write at least 6000 original words (approximately
30 pages) in this class.
- ESL Discussion, Vocabulary and Reading
(Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced)
Students learn to comprehend and participate in conversations on a variety of
topics, expand their vocabulary and idioms by reading and discussing real-life
articles and stories, and improve their pronunciation and syntax. Typical
assignments include giving short oral reports, conducting out-of-class interviews
and research projects, and taking notes on short lectures.
