English as a Second Language - Level I

Duration: 4 weeks

  • Ask for and give basic information about yourself using short simple sentences with one or two adjectives
  • Learn verb forms and tenses, nouns and pronouns, modal expressions, and the passive voice
  • Express and respond appropriately to basic instructions
  • Describe habits, routines, truths, likes, wants and needs
  • Make polite requests to get information
  • Describe people, places and things using simple basic sentences
  • Students will be making short presentations and editing their work
  • Communicate effectively in spoken English through class discussions and participation at an appropriate level.

English as a Second Language - Level II

Duration: 4 weeks

  • Describe activities in the past, present or future using basic sentences
  • Express ability using can/know/how to/be able to
  • Learn irregular verbs, auxiliary verbs, present tenses and other verb tenses
  • Understanding phrasal verbs and use them appropriately
  • Make comparisons using comparative and superlatives
  • Describe people, objects and actions using simple sentences with two or three adjectives
  • Review and enhancement of basic spelling patterns and rules
  • Communicate effectively in spoken English through class discussions and participation at an appropriate level

English as a Second Language - Level III

Duration: 4 weeks

  • Express actions happening in the past, recent past, future and now using descriptive sentences
  • Express and respond to promises, assurances and refusal
  • Review of grammatical terminology, basic word order, auxiliary verbs, present tenses, other verb tenses, modal and related auxiliaries, the passive voice, nouns and noun modifiers
  • Differentiate between situations that require suggestions or advice and respond accordingly
  • Describe situations, make comparisons and express capacity using formulaic sentences
  • Socialize within known frameworks
  • Communicate effectively in spoken English through class discussions and participation at an appropriate level

English as a Second Language - Level IV

Duration: 4 weeks

  • Express several actions happening in the past, recent past, continuous, future simple passive and now using coherent descriptive sentences
  • Review of compound sentence structures; complex sentence structures based on noun clauses, adjective clauses, and adverb clauses; use of gerunds and infinitives; and expressions of cause-effect, contrast, and condition
  • Use adverbial phrases and clauses
  • Describe events/actions using gerunds and infinitives
  • Describe people, places, things, actions, events and possibilities using fairly lengthy descriptive sentences
  • Socialize within known frameworks, and with some problems, within unknown frameworks
  • Communicate effectively in spoken English through class discussions and participation at an appropriate level

English as a Second Language - Level V

Duration: 4 weeks

  • Express several actions happening in the past, recent past, continuous, future and now, active and passive using complex descriptive sentences
  • Report views expressed by others using appropriate tenses
  • Review coordination and subordination, verb forms and tenses, modal expressions and related issues, nouns and related issues, modification and conditional expressions, as well as an introduction to the editing process
  • Describe people, places, things, events and actions in detail
  • Express and discuss activities using appropriate modal verbs
  • Express both specific and general concepts with reasonable accuracy
  • Communicate effectively in spoken English through class discussion and participation at an appropriate level

English as a Second Language - Level VI

Duration: 4 weeks

  • Detailed expression of actions
  • Use a variety of gerund and infinitive structures correctly
  • Make detailed contrasts and comparisons and descriptions about familiar and unfamiliar topics
  • Introduce, summarize and organize topics appropriately
  • Review of sentence structure and related issues, coordination and subordination, verb forms and tenses, modal expressions and related issues, nouns and related issues, modification, and conditional expression, as well as intermediate editing processes
  • Increase the vocabulary of students so that they may be better equipped for college and the workplace. Students build personal vocabulary lists while developing skills in dictionary usage, context clues, and word derivatives
  • Describe events, things, people, plans and opinions in complex detail
  • Communicate effectively in English through class discussions and participation at an appropriate level
